Hymn Singing

I’m sure many of you are familiar with singing these old time favorite hymns in church, but have you ever reflected on what they truly mean. In fact, so often when we sing them, we are being dishonest because the words that come out of our mouths are very different than how we live. Someone suggested the following:
- We sing Sweet Hour of Prayer and are content with 5 minutes a day
- We sing Onward Christian Soldiers and have to be drafted into the Lord’s service
- We sing O For A Thousand Tongues to sing and don’t use the one we have
- We sing Blest Be The Tie That Binds and let the least little offense break it.
- We sing There Shall Be Showers of Blessing and don’t come to church when it rains
- We sing I Love To Tell the Story and never mention it at all
- We sing Serve the Lord With Gladness and gripe about all we have to do
- We sing We’re Marching to Zion but have trouble marching to church
- We sing Cast Thy Burdens on the Lord and worry ourselves into a nervous breakdown
- We sing the Whole Wide World for Jesus and never witness to our next door neighbor
- We sing Throw Out the Lifeline and content ourselves with throwing out the fishing line.
